I used to think being able to work all night was a sign that I was strong. A deadline was coming? Stay up. Something needed to be finished? Keep going. Five hours of sleep? I'll catch up later.
In my 20s, I could do it and still show up the next morning. So I assumed I was fine. I wasn't. I was just young enough to recover from it.
I Didn't Realize What I Was Trading
When you're young, losing a few hours of sleep doesn't always feel like a big deal. You drink coffee. You push through the day. You promise yourself you'll sleep properly tomorrow. Then tomorrow gets busy too. The problem is that your body keeps the score even when you don't notice it immediately.
Sleep affects much more than feeling tired. It plays a role in mood, concentration, appetite, recovery, and overall health. I wish I had understood that sleep wasn't time I was losing. It was time my body was using to recover.
Now I See It Differently
These days, I don't feel proud when I stay up all night. I feel like I'm borrowing energy from tomorrow. And eventually, the bill comes. Maybe not the next morning. Maybe months or years later.
That's what I didn't understand when I was younger. Being able to survive on very little sleep isn't the same as being healthy. Your body can forgive you for a while. That doesn't mean you should keep asking it to.
