I used to think I was good at handling stress. The more I could handle without complaining, the stronger I thought I was.
Work was stressful? Keep going.Life was overwhelming? Deal with it.Exhausted? Everyone is tired.
I thought that was resilience. Now I'm not so sure.
Maybe I Was Just Getting Used to Stress
There is a difference between handling stress and living in it. I didn't always notice when I was overwhelmed because being overwhelmed had become normal. I was always thinking about the next thing.
The next deadline. The next problem. The next responsibility.
Even when nothing urgent was happening, my mind didn't seem to know how to switch off. And I thought that was just adulthood.
I've Changed My Definition of Strong
Now I think strength includes knowing when to stop.
Taking a walk.
Turning off the phone.
Saying no.
Getting enough sleep.
Taking a quiet afternoon without feeling guilty.
These things used to feel unproductive. Now I see them differently. Stress management isn't about creating a life without stress. That's probably impossible. It's about giving your body and mind a chance to recover from it.
Being able to carry everything isn't the definition of strength. Sometimes strength is knowing what you don't need to carry.
