Eight kilograms. In just two months. At first, I couldn't believe it. I even wondered if the scales were broken. So I stepped off, waited a few seconds, and tried again. Same number. That was the moment I realised something had been changing long before my weight did.
The Weight Wasn't the Real Problem
Looking back, the weight wasn't the first warning. It was simply the loudest one. For months, maybe even years, my body had been whispering. I was constantly tired, even after a full night's sleep. I found myself reaching for coffee just to get through the afternoon.
My energy disappeared long before the day was over. Cooking healthy meals started to feel like too much effort. Takeaway became more convenient than chopping vegetables. I told myself I was just busy. Everyone feels like this, don't they? That's what I wanted to believe.
Somewhere Along the Way, I Stopped Looking After Myself
I didn't wake up one morning and decide to be unhealthy. It happened through hundreds of small decisions. Skipping breakfast because I was running late. Choosing convenience over nutrition. Sitting for hours without moving. Promising myself I'd exercise tomorrow. Tomorrow eventually became next week. Next week became next month. Without realising it, I'd built a lifestyle that no longer looked after me.
I Kept Blaming Everything Except My Habits
Maybe it's my hormones. Maybe it's stress. Maybe my metabolism has slowed down. Maybe getting older is just like this. Some of those things may have played a part. But I also had to ask myself an uncomfortable question. When was the last time I truly looked after my body? Not because I wanted to lose weight. Not because I wanted to look better. Simply because it deserved to be cared for. I couldn't remember.
I Miss the Person Who Used to Feel Energised
What surprised me most wasn't seeing a bigger number on the scales. It was feeling like I'd lost something much more valuable.
My energy. My confidence. My motivation.
I used to wake up ready for the day. Now I was waking up already tired. Simple tasks felt heavier. Even my thoughts felt slower. It wasn't just my body carrying extra weight. My mind was too.
Maybe This Didn't Start Two Months Ago
The truth is, I probably didn't gain 8kg in two months. I gained it over years of putting myself last. Over years of believing I'd have more time later. More time to exercise. More time to cook. More time to sleep. More time to slow down. My body was simply showing me the bill for choices I'd been making for a long time.
This Isn't Another Weight-Loss Story
I've tried diets before. I've promised myself "this Monday" more times than I can count. Lose five kilos. Gain them back. Start again. I'm tired of living like that. This time, I'm not chasing a smaller number. I'm chasing a healthier life. If the weight comes off, that's wonderful. But what I really want is to wake up with energy again. To feel strong. To think clearly. To enjoy moving my body instead of avoiding it. To grow older without feeling like I'm falling apart.
A Different Beginning
This blog isn't about becoming the person I was ten years ago. It's about becoming a healthier version of the person I am today. I'm not a doctor. I'm not a nutritionist. I'm just someone who ignored the quiet signals for too long. Now I'm learning to listen. One meal at a time. One walk at a time. One healthier choice at a time.
If you've been feeling like your body has been trying to tell you something too, maybe we can figure it out together. We don't need to change everything overnight. Sometimes the first step is simply admitting that something needs to change. For me, that first step began with eight unexpected kilograms. Looking back, it wasn't the extra weight that changed my life. It was finally paying attention.
